Drekkubus Lore

Drekkubus are bipedal mammals (not anthro) that originate and live in the land of Beryl Shad. Beryl Shad is a vast land filled with many of the same creatures on Earth, and many different ones, too.

Beryl Shad is a continent, and it's never specified exactly where it is. Helps with imagination!

Drekkubus are descendants of dragons and a bipedal cat species from long ago. They still harbor many traits of both:

Dragon: Pretty much all drekkubus hoard items, unfortunately sometimes they hoard weird things like food, or dirt, but they all have a stash somewhere. They have long tapered tails, and can use magic called Affinities! (Keep on reading to learn more.)

Felines: Drekkubus can purr, they carry similar bacteria in the mouth to felines, cat-like paw-pads, feline-structured face. Young Drekkies knead their moms, they are fascinated by cardboard boxes, and sharpen their long claws.

DREKKIE CAREERS (TOP 10...IN NO ORDER)

There are plenty of other career choices .... no career and living on the land is an option too.

DREKKIE PETS AND MOUNTS

Apar

The Apar is a very odd and interesting creature. Many Drekkubus are gifted their Apar at a very young age, and the Apar species is known to grow according to its owners size. Apar are much larger than Drekkubus, but have an almost spiritual bond to the species, and unless killed, will remain a lifelong partner to many Drekkubus. They are very large creatures with coarse fur, and when threatened the fur is clumped together by oily skin secretions, hardening the hair in to porcupine-like Armour. Apar are not especially smart, but are in tune to the owner's needs and wants. They are not exactly pretty, and only come in natural colors. This sturdy beast can gallop at semi-high speeds, but watch out! This big ugly guy cannot stop quickly. Apar are usually allowed to roam on their own in nearby fields to Drekkubus settlements, as they have no natural predators and enjoy the herd life when not traveling.

Wild Apar are thinner and more deer-like, and can be hunted and used as food. Apar mounts are more bison or musk-ox like. They always have 6 legs, and usually have a weird large horn or horns. They have a horse-like huge face with tusks, and a short, fat paddle tail used to steer. The Apar pictured is JingJing, Mambo's Apar.

Drekkubus do not use other mounts.

Behemoth Drekkubus do not use Apar mounts, they are too big, and also find it terribly offensive.

Pets

Drekkubus, like us, occasionally like to tame and keep companion animals as pets and friends. The most common pets to be found are usually small, like birds,  rodents, etc, but here's a good list of regional common pets. Closed or open species pets are not allowed, because coordinating with the maker of the species between their fantasy world and ours is too difficult. If you are the creator of the species, you can come to Admin Mambo and ask her about it if you insist that your Drekkie has a unique companion.

But, beware. Drekkubus are omnivores, and omnivores can and will eat meat. This means a hungry Drekkie might see your pet as a yummy snack! So it does carry risks.

  • Pokoui: Arctic hares, arctic fox, birds, raccoons

  • Windgrass: Plains hares, hawks, red fox, mice

  • Dai'Ren: Birds, mice, insects, fish, pets tend to be small

  • Southmarsh: Capybara, opossum, mice, lizards

  • Highridge: Sand cats, desert fox, owl, lizards

  • Ren Sea:  Sea otter, sea birds, reptiles

DREKKIE HOLIDAYS

(AUTUMN) Hallow Moon: A somewhat similar holiday traditionally to the human holiday, the Hallow Moon festival is one of the largest fests to date. Preparation begins in September, and though the festival begins in October some impatient or excited Drekkies will begin decorating early. It's thought that when the trees lose their leaves, they should be honored for another year of shade and life, thus Drekkubus begin collecting them to decorate, wear, craft, and generally make use of. Unlike other festivals in Beryl Shad, Hallow Moon, or Hallow’s Moon is celebrated in all regions, though Southmarsh is known for the best festivities.

Activities include:

  • During September, leaves are collected and made use of. Some in costumes, decorations, and most whelps fill a hand woven wicker basket with their most prized finds. The whelps stack the baskets and light them about ablaze on Pyre Night in October.

  • Pumpkins and gourds are carved out in order to lead the spirits of the dead to the fest, as they're said to mimic glowing will-o-wisp eyes!

  • Masks are worn often at this time of year traditionally. Whelps don't dress up per say, but are known to paint their masks differently each night.

  • Pyre Night, or The Harvest Burn, is what humans call Halloween. For the sake of celebration, art, and fun on our end the holidays are the same. On this night, the whelps burn their offering baskets that they're woven in order to receive a larger Harvest the following year. This tradition is a little out dated, but still continues.

  • During The Harvest Burn, drinks flow endlessly. The pyre is kept burning until sunrise. Contests like pumpkin carving, mask painting, cheese eating and more take place.

  • Traditionally, throughout the month Faes and Drakes will prepare culinary masterpieces of cheese, making it the most delightful month ever for those who love to eat!

  • Again traditionally, Drekkubus will attempt to scare one another during this spooky month, but watch out. This behavior is frowned upon in the Kingdom.

(SUMMER) Dai'Ren Star Festival: Said to be one of the most magical and beautiful of festivals, if you can handle the crowds and the noises. This festival takes place in the Summer on June 1st, the celebrate the beginning of the Whelping season. The Star Festival only takes place in the walls of the Dai'Ren kingdom, and regionally close outside of the walls. It's crowded and loud. but magical and fun, fire-affinity Drekkies are said to have the most fun here.

Activities include:

  • Setting off firecrackers in the streets is a common whelp activity

  • Painting with chalks and rain-washable paint on the streets and buildings

  • Of course...making cheese

  • Baking sweets, big deal!

  • Setting off paper lanterns in to the sky together in the evening

  • Sewing new harnesses for your Apar or sell is popular for the festival

  • Singing chants and hymns directed towards a healthy whelping season

  • Parents who have lost whelps are honored with gifts at this time of year

  • It is extremely common to leave gifts at orphanages on this holiday

(SUMMER) The Fringe Fair: A really interesting set of events that probably started out for a reason, but no one really remembers that reason these days. The Fringe Fair is set up annually in the Windgrass Country in the Spring (March 30th-April 5th), one of the only national events that it has. It's a really strange set of events where the winner takes home Sen (drekkie coin) and a huge cheese wheel. But honestly, who WOULDN'T want to come watch this?

Activities include:

  • Keeping your balance on a log rotating in the water

  • Cheese eating

  • Apar racing

  • Trying to catch a another greased Drekkie because...reasons...?

  • A lot of other dumb stuff, just for fun

  • Injuries usually...no definitely...occur

DREKKIE RELIGION

Demiras [dem-ee-rahss) The Sun God: Demiras is considered to be the God of the Sun. He will watch over whelps and Drekkies during the light that falls upon them during the daytime. It is believed that he is harder than his mate, the moon goddess, and less forgiving. This is why, during harsh sun or intense heat, Drekkies might say something like -

  • 'Demiras is displeased with us today,' or comment on the fiery rage of Demiras.

  • Some Drekkies believe during droughts, or extreme heat, Demiras is missing his mate, the Moon Goddess.

  • During heavy cloud cover, they may say he is asleep.

  • During a very sunny hot day, they may comment that Demiras is scouring the Earth for his mate Anaity, it is thought that he believes she is trapped somewhere on the planet.

  • Offerings: Meats, cheeses, wheat, plants grown in his sun.

Anaity (Ahna-ity) The Moon Goddess - Anaity is considered to be the Goddess of the Moon. She will watch over whelps and Drekkies under her soft moonlight. She is thought to be softer and less harsh than her mate Demiras. She is also considered to be somewhat distraught and lonely, and the reason for the moon's cycles through the month is that she is turning her back slowly on the people. During a new moon, she is completely turned away from her people, looking on 'the other side' for her mate Demiras. But she cannot find him, and thus always returns. Phrases you might hear in reference to Anaity are things like -

  • 'Anaity's eye is turned. Be careful.'

  • Or perhaps they're thieves, you might hear them whisper 'Anaity does not watch us tonight, go, and take what you can.'

  • You may hear 'Anaity is with us this evening,' during strong moonlight.

  • Or, 'Anaity comes,' as the moon lowers.

  • Offerings: Fresh fruit, satins and beautiful cloths, flowers. Sometimes, fireflies, because some Drekkubus believe the light reminds her of her lost mate Demiras, and comforts her.

Note: Not all Drekkubus believe in the legend of Demiras and Anaity, and then there are some who believe more than others. Drekkubus religion is not exactly like human religion. It's kind of a half and half mix of legend, and religion. You'll find Drekkubus who appreciate the story of Demiras and Anaity, but think it's a child's story. You'll find others who, just to be safe, place offerings monthly on personal altars, or the town altar, if it has one. You'll find entire temples dedicated to Demiras and Anaity, and Drekkies who devote their lives to it. It is a vastly mixed bag. Whelps tend to really get in to it and talk about it. Most Drekkies know the story, but it's told a little differently regionally.

The Four Seasons -  Legend has is that Anaity and Demiras bore 4 whelps before they were separated. The whelps became the four seasons, and they have various relationships with their parents.  The legend of the four seasons is a little less popular and a little less universally commented on or mentioned than the story of Anaity and Demiras.

  • Tenzi - A strong Drake, he is the Summer. Tenzi is harsh and grumpy, like his father. Sometimes during a very hot summer day, someone might comment that Tenzi is arguing with his father, Demiras, creating the strong heat. Cooler evenings in the summer mean that Tenzi is with his mother Anaity, and she can calm him.

  • Retzia - A soft and quiet Fae, Retzia represents the Winter. Retzia is thought to be calmer and happier with her father, and during harsh winter nights, she is missing her father, and her and her mother, Anaity, mourn together.

  • Demiki - He is a brooding young Drake, and his is Autumn. Demiki is troubled, but his love for Autumn is unbeatable. Demiki is a lover of carved pumpkins, crisp fall leaves, and thinks Autumn moons are beautiful, because he is a mother's boy.

  • Faalvik - A happy and quirky Fae, Faalvik is what we call Spring. She is considered the bridge between her parents, and it's thought that in Spring, they can talk through Faalvik. She is viewed as loving and kind, and provides the world with new life every year.

Note: The Four Seasons legend is usually viewed as mostly a legend. Some believe the whelps exist, but they never really think about or consider them, but know they are there. Some adamantly think the seasons are controlled by these offspring. It's still told as a story though, it's just optional about who believes it. Whelps tend to really get in to it and talk about it. Most Drekkies know the story, but it's told a little differently regionally.
